December is here and with it, we activate the Christmas mode of cold, film, fireplace and blanket. December is the perfect month to light your wood cooker, while you enjoy any movie with the family, right?

In today’s post, we take advantage of these dates and we get into cinephile mode to remember mythical films where fireplaces and fire have played a leading role and maybe you didn’t realise it!

Mary Poppins is undoubtedly the film of fireplaces and chimney sweeps. It was released in 1964 by Walt Disney and nominated for 13 Oscars, of which it won 5.

Set in London in the 20th century, a time when chimneys played a fundamental role in family homes. The chimney sweep’s profession was one of the best known, and his role was extremely important in everyday life.

If you have seen the film, you will remember the scene where the chimney sweep Bert sings a song about the chimney with the children as they walk across the rooftops of London.

Titanic and its famous four chimneys

Based on the dramatic catastrophe of the ocean liner in 1912 and released in 1988. It was nominated for 13 Oscars, winning 11 of them.

If we remember the Titanic, we all have that image in our minds of the great ship and, without a doubt, one of the images that has remained most engraved in the minds of viewers is the image of those four chimneys.

On the ship, only three of the four chimneys were operational. Black smoke came out of the first three and white steam came out of the last one, as it was used for ventilation in the galley and other areas of the ship.

In addition to these four chimneys leading to the engine room, they are also the main features of the first class cabins. They were considered a luxury at the time, and there were numerous fireplaces in these cabins, as well as in the common areas of the ship.

The chimney plays a very important role, as it was the entrance to a mysterious world of fear and secrets that were not to be found.

The Pianist

Film released in 2003 by Roman Polaski. The film tells the story of Władysław Szpilman, a Polish and Jewish pianist who faces the abyss of death during the Holocaust era.

If you have seen the film, you will surely remember the mythical scene where Władysław, in front of a German captain, plays a wonderful Chopin ballad on the piano, in front of a fireplace, which will save his life.
