Those of us who enjoy and love having a fireplace or wood-burning stove in our home will never give up the warmth and comfort it brings to our homes. Having a wood-burning stove or fireplace in your home has many advantages, but sometimes the smell of smoke from the fireplace or cooker can be unpleasant if we do not pay enough attention to cleaning and maintenance.
Why do these smells occur? We should know that these smells are produced by the air passing through the channel when there is an excess of soot or dirt.
Tips to neutralise chimney smells
There are several tips that will help you to eliminate the smell of soot from the chimney and even any unwanted odour that we find in our house.
Before going through these tips, we would like to point out that the most important thing is to renew the air in the house on a daily basis, at least for 5 minutes in the morning.
Now, let’s go with these tricks!
white vinegar
Yes, yes, as you hear! White vinegar is one of the best odour neutralisers there is. How can we use it?
- By filling several glasses with the vinegar and spreading them around the room where the odour is. Depending on the size of the room, one or two glasses will be enough.
- For furniture, walls and the fireplace, you can mix in a bucket of water and white vinegar. Wipe the surface with a cloth.
- You can use a rag and moisten it with white vinegar. Shake it around the room and it will reduce the smell.
Salt
Salt reduces soot residue. Pour a handful of salt when the chimney is in operation. The less soot, the less odour.
baking soda
Sprinkle a small layer on the furniture and leave it on overnight. The next day, vacuum it up well so as not to leave any residue.
activated charcoal
This type of product is effective because it is very porous and absorbs odours very easily. The procedure is based on filling several glasses or containers with water and placing small amounts of activated charcoal inside. Then spread them around the room.
Vanilla essence
Place a few drops of vanilla essence on a piece of cotton wool and place it under the furniture and corners of the room.
Scented candles
Minimise the smell of smoke. It should be noted that this is a solution for a specific moment, but we recommend the previous options much more.
